چکیده

The generation and the removal of the various optical absorption bands in natural amethyst and in synthetic a-quartz doped with either Fe'* or Fe"* ions has been surveyed. Fositive rhombohedral growth regions of synthetic a-qvattz containing Fe'* ion proved to be related to the generation of the amethyst color upon treatment with ionizing radiation. It is believed that the interstitial Fe'* ions in voids perpendicular to positive rhombohedral faces furnish charge compensation for substitutional Fe"* ion. This combination is the precursor of several color centers responsible for the production of the amethyst color.

Fractionation of Oxygen Isotopes at the Faces of Smoky Quartz

Recently we reported on a new isotope effect [1]: During the growth of natural amethyst, Si02 with different lsO content is incorporated at crystallo graphically different faces of the crystal, the 180 / 160 ratio increasing in the order z-face, r-face, m-face. Meanwhile a similar effect in natural calcite was re ported by J. A. D. Dickson [2]. Care must be taken if one wants to single out su...

Pressure induced structural fluctuations in hemoglobin, studied by EPR-spectroscopy.

A quartz based cavity for pressure dependent EPR measurements on liquid samples allowing pressures up to 0.6 GPa was constructed. First investigations with this setup were done on spin labeled horse hemoglobin derivatives both in ferric and ferrous state of oxidation. The second derivative EPR spectra show changes of the label's mobility, which are not correlated with spin state changes of the ...

A comparative study between the dispersible Ferric pyrophosphate particles and Ferrous sulfate in treatment of pediatric patients with iron deficiency anemia

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common type of anemia related to malnutrition worldwide. It represents a major problem in developing countries, especially in Egypt. Ferric pyrophosphate (FPP) is a water-insoluble iron compound often used to fortify infant cereals and chocolate drink powders. It causes no adverse color and flavor changes to food vehicles. This study was done...

A simplified method for estimation of jarosite and acid-forming sulfates in acid mine wastes.

In acid base accounting (ABA) estimates of acid mine wastes, the acid potential (AP) estimate can be improved by using the net carbonate value (NCV) reactive sulfide S method rather than total S assay methods but this does not give recovery of potentially acid producing ferrous and ferric sulfates present in many wastes. For more accurate estimation of AP, an effective, site-specific method to ...

Selective Adhesion of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans to Pyrite.

Bacterial adhesion to mineral surfaces plays an important role not only in bacterial survival in natural ecosystems, but also in mining industry applications. Selective adhesion was investigated with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans by using four minerals, pyrite, quartz, chalcopyrite, and galena. Escherichia coli was used as a control bacterium. Contact angles were used as indicators of hydrophobicit...
